Sample Household Survey: Size of HDB Households, by Ethnic Group and Flat Type
Housing & Development Board (HDB) derives household size statistics from the Sample Household Survey (SHS), conducted every five years for Singapore public housing residents. Four CSV datasets break averages, medians, and distributions by ethnic group and flat type. Planners studying crowding, demographics, and HDB flat mix can apply the household–dwelling unit definition noted in official metadata. Coverage runs from 2008 through 2018 across the bundled files.
Official description
Data is derived from the Sample Household Survey (SHS) which is conducted once every 5 years.
A household is defined based on the household-dwelling unit concept as an entire group of persons, who may or may not be related, living together in a housing unit. There may also be one-person households, where a person lives alone in a single housing unit. The household is equated with the housing unit and there is usually one household per housing
unit. Subtenants or maids dwelling in the same housing unit as the lessee(s) or registered tenant(s) do not constitute part of the household.
Average and median household size in HDB flats in Singapore from 2008 through 2018, published by the Housing & Development Board in CSV by ethnic group from the Sample Household Survey years. Demographers compare crowding and family size trends across Chinese, Malay, Indian, and other HDB resident groups.
Housing & Development Board CSV of household size distribution by ethnic group among HDB resident households, drawn from Sample Household Survey rounds between 2008 and 2018. Each row gives the survey year, ethnic group, household size, and the percentage of households in that category. Housing and social researchers use it to compare household composition across ethnic groups and survey rounds.
Housing & Development Board CSV of household size by flat type in Singapore from 2008 through 2018. Columns cover Sample Household Survey year, flat type, household size, and percentage. Housing researchers and HDB planners track how household size distributions differ across flat types over the Sample Household Survey decade.
Housing & Development Board CSV of average and median HDB household size by flat type from Sample Household Survey years spanning 2008 through 2018. Housing researchers compare how crowded different flat types are over successive SHS rounds.
