This National Library Board dataset indexes digitised articles from The Straits Maritime Journal and General News for 1895 and 1896, part of NLB's release of newspapers published 70 years ago or longer. Each row captures the newspaper title, issue id and issue date, edition, page id and page number, article id and article title, the opening fifty words of the article, and the contributor. The title's short two-year run makes this a compact but focused window into late nineteenth-century shipping and general news reporting in the Straits Settlements. Historians, maritime researchers and digital humanities projects use it for keyword discovery and for assembling text corpora from Singapore's colonial-era press.

These materials present a valuable resource on Singapore’s history, art and culture, digitised as part of an endeavour to preserve and provide better access to resources located within the library to enable users to explore and discover these resources.
